Through this course, we were tasked to expand upon the existing volunteer program FLEX (French Language Exploration) which currently teaches French and Francophone culture at University Place Elementary school.
The program is for 2nd Grade age students and promotes the growth of Francophone culture and teachings of the French Language. Through research for this project, the class discovered that language education in primary education is hard to come by in the United States. In the state of Alabama specifically, language is not taught until High School and if it is taught before then it is through private schools. Our goal was to provide the experience and opportunity of learning French to a school that was underfunded.
This course allowed me to develop my personal French language skills, leadership skills, as well as interpersonal and presentational communication skills.
Our volunteer duties included, the creation of lesson plans, presentations and weekly activities that the enhance knowledge of French language and culture.
As a students enrolled in the course we engaged in a hands-on service-learning project at University Place Elementary school lessons with an emphasis on understanding different Francophone cultures and understanding what it means to be a global citizen.
Below I have attached my final projects, that we were able teach to our assigned 2nd grade classes. The project includes a language focused presentation and lesson plan, and a culture focused presentation and lesson plan.
